fleur de lumiere

The series FLEUR DE LUMIERE and VANITAS, were created as a digital interpretation of of old (Dutch) still lifes, whose precision and realism have always fascinated me.

Before the invention of photography in 1826, painting was regarded as »the« major of realism and artists of the time were grandmasters of the study of nature and detailed painted depictions.

The basis of this project was to interpret the amazing quality of the former works by using a »simple« copying machine in the form of a flatbed scanner - which normally used to copy images and documents into digital form in a fast process and without any claim to aesthetics. The appeal lies in the processual dialectic of opposites: Detailed grace through simple technology (Made in China). The fusion of reality and digitality between handcraft and technology.

Finally the narrative remains untouched: The beauty of the ephemeral. A final, powerful moment of living beauty, before its transformation into the ugliness of death.
